FAQ

Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ page). Below, we have tried to answer the most common questions visitors to our Website may have.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an established, safe and very effective hands-on approach to clinical practice that looks at a person from a mechanical viewpoint and recognises the importance of the musculo-skeletal system in the maintenance of health.

The osteopathic process utilises many conventional medical methods of evaluation as well as assessing the mechanical and functional integrity of the body, recognising that each individual is different.

What do Osteopaths Treat?

Osteopaths can treat a wide range of conditions / problems within any age group, although some osteopaths may specialise in a particular area. Here are some of the problems that osteopaths deal with on a daily basis:

  • Muscle / Tendon / Ligament Injuries

  • Hip / Knee / Ankle Pain

  • Back Pain

  • Whiplash Injuries

  • Jaw Problems

  • Stiff/painful neck

  • Arthritic pain

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Repetitive Strain Injury

  • Shoulder Pain

  • Headaches caused by posture or tension

  • Bursitis

  • Tennis/Golfers Elbow

  • Tendonitis

Osteopaths are trained to a high standard to ensure that they are able to recognise whether treatment is appropriate for your problem. It may be necessary in addition to the osteopathic assessment to also seek further information from your doctor / medical records or to request medical tests / x-rays before a diagnosis can be made - of course with your full written consent

Can my problem be treated by an Osteopath?

It is not possible to diagnose your problem over the telephone because part of the diagnostic procedure involves clinical examination and manual palpation. If in doubt, come along for an initial consultation because Osteopaths are qualified to diagnose many conditions that cause pain. In the event that Osteopathic treatment is not appropriate, they will be able to advise you where to seek further assistance.

What will happen on the initial Consultation?

As well as discussing your current problem a full medical history will be taken. The Osteopath will then examine you using conventional medical procedures (where necessary) and osteopathic evaluation techniques (observation / palpation).

Osteopaths consider the mechanical integrity of the body as a whole and as such it is normal for the osteopath to assess other joints / muscles etc. in addition to the immediate problem area.

Following this process the findings and diagnosis will be discussed with you and an appropriate treatment agreed.

What treatments will the Osteopath use?

The Osteopath has a range of techniques to treat many different problems.  It is likely that they will use 1 or more of the following:

    What should you wear?

It is likely that you will need to undress down to your underwear, therefore please wear suitable undergarments.
